MARKET NEWS

Economy: The economy affects everyone. Final 1st Quarter GDP numbers are showing a -0.5% reduction in performance. Not bad, with better news coming.

Jobs: Unemployment Claims are steady with slow growth in the “continuing claims” number approaching 2 M. Over the past 6 months, this number is up about 5 %.

Monetary Policy: Conversations continue between the Fed Reserve and Treasury Department. Discussions concern deregulation of bank liquidity restrictions. There is some agreement and a good likelihood of change. Markets rates are easing, on the news, as it would add competition.

Federal Reserve Policy – A Helpful perspective: CoVid brought a loss of $850 Billion in productivity. In response our government kicked in $4 Trillions and the Federal Reserve $5 T, through Quantitative Easing. Outcome: An inflationary asset bubble caused by too many dollars chasing a severe supply-chain shortage. Sadly, some of this bubble remains. Risk: Reducing rates too soon, or too rapidly, could re-ignite inflation.

Offset: Dropping oil prices and lower gas prices, significantly reduce transportation costs, farm and fertilize costs, and other ripple effects. I look to lower mortgage rates in the Fall. Plus lower rates, may increase productivity and product supply, offsetting supply chain issues.

Housing: What a difference a year makes – except in the housing market. Compare this May to May, 2024, and the comparison is really a match. Both numbers are so close the differences can be called a rounding errors. Good news ! With similar numbers for about 2 1/2 years, there isn’t much to add or take away from the market.

Slowdown in housing sales: This may be an indicator of slower household formation. Our annual average has been near 1.8 M new households formed annually. Yet, over the past 6 months, this same number has dropped to about 1.2 M pace. Good news: Our pace of building new units – rental and owner-occupied, is finding a better balance. Question: If interest rates drop, in the face of a reduction in formation, could we see another issue of unanswered pent up demand?

The Good, the Bad, And the Ugly

The Good: In listening, reading and learning, a fabulous suggestion from David Bahnsen: We should ignore the latest headlines du jour, as headlines rarely impact the long-term economy. In short, take care of one’s emotional sensitivities. And we can help you, by way of developing a rational, long-term investment strategy.

The Bad: A sad story about PG&E. Back in the day, to build new power plants PG&E had to first raise $100 M. Rates payers paid an additional $.03 / KW charge. Being a bond sale, the State held the money. By the time $100M was raised, the cost was now $150M. Outcome: State would not release the $100M, as it would not finish the project. The State kept the money.

Reminds one of FNMA and FHLMC. Government took control after the financial reset and all profits went into the “general” fund. Now the same government claims it lacks needed liquidity to go private. Think? Strip the savings account and then say, sorry we can’t.

Government, lacking open competition, hides the small details and layers of funny money.

And, the Ugly: Something we can fix: Terminology. Time for the term ‘uncertainty’ to go away in favor of: “measurable degrees of confidence”. Clarity helps overcome knee-jerk response to headlines.
