Jobs: Weakness is real. ADP’s rolling 3-month job creation numbers are down to 3,ooo. They were 200,000 a year ago. Federal Reserve are you listening. Time for another rate cut?

Residential Lending: Residential loan products – reminding one of what was called the Great Financial Conundrum – are again entering the market. These are the more flexible programs: Stated income, no tax returns, and such. A sign Lender underwriting is far better prepared than before. New programs and lending products re-enter the market, benefiting Self-Employed, Real Estate Investors, Asset-rich Households, Foreign Nationals and Credit-event Come Backs. Housing – Home Sales: Numbers are up. Existing home sales increased, as did new home sales. For all the noise about affordability, I simply point: If all the news is about the bad market, know this, everything available is being sold – and in a timely fashion’

Inflation: An inflation number not governmental reporting, is eating at us hard. Utilities. Overall, utility costs have exceeded inflation nearly every year over the past decade. Paying the price for solar infrastructure and wildfire mitigation, lead the way as to increases.

As for standard reported inflation, the metrics continue easing. For September the PPI was up 0.3 % , with most tied to gasoline – up 12 %. The Core reading was up 0.1 % with a year-over-year read of 2.6 %.

The Rage: AI: How quickly a market can change. Recently, I pooh poohed the AI bubble talk. Then within weeks, the Fab7 and others, came to the bond market to the tune of $100 Billion. This for the sake of AI growth and buildouts. With the investment horizon expected to be looking at 1Trillon per year, the future looks bright, but potential for an over-build and value reset?

The Good News: These are not “new” companies with untested balance sheet of dot.com days. Such speaks to capitalism on full go with great potential for job growth. There will be winners and losers in all of this, and how it shakes out will prove interesting.

The Good, the Bad, And the Ugly

The Good: From The Rational Optimist, we read: The Blight is the ever-growing tangle of rules and layers of bureaucracy strangling innovation. The Blight is why you wince when you open your power bill, why health insurance costs a second mortgage, and why America can’t seem to build anything on time or on budget.

In response: Step 1) In June, the President signed an executive order overturning America’s ban on supersonic flight. Step 2) We let a scary story about “radioactive goo” beat the facts, and take away nuclear energy — our cleanest, safest, most reliable source of power. Step 3) In March, the President signed four executive orders to free nuclear energy The Blight.

The Bad: In response to talk about what’s bad, people are bringing perspectives on ways to bring improvements, innovation, and constructive ecological repair. It brings hope to the conversation. Thus, what is the Bad this month? It’s the unbalanced percentage of headlines stressing doom and gloom; of finding no hope in individuals. A friend once said, if we embrace 80 % of negative, and if we carry it to the next day, it becomes 95 %. Do me a favor, give someone you know, an unexpected and friendly hug – a great gift for the Season.

Speaking of headlines: I subscribe to and read, Fix The News. It recently dug into MSM reporting – NY Times, Wa Post, and Fox news. A sad imbalance: Heart disease and cancer account for 56 % of annual deaths, yet only 7 % of news coverage. The other end of the scale is terrorism. This accounts for 0.001 % of deaths, yet gets 18 % of coverage. Another is Homicides. 1 % of deaths annually and 49 % of media coverage. They use the term Misery Machine. Such as this, I call Miserabalism.

And, the Ugly: The harsh reality check to investing in California: Tesla built its gigafactory in Austin, in the same amount of time it takes to get a single permit trapped in California bureaucracy.

Perspective

Misserabalism: Even in my industry, there are news sources carrying a certain pessimistic tone often by way of mis-using / presenting data. Annual deficit spending is going to hit 2 T. Spoiler alert, we have been at 2 T per year since Co-Vid. How about the Federal Reserve balance sheet being used to monetize the debt? Spoiler alert, the Fed balance sheet has dropped over 20 % since the Co-Vid peak – to the tune of a reduction of about 3 T dollars. Tariffs should help.

Yes, we have problems, but we know what they are. Most often is those we elect to govern, at all levels, promoting partisan spending priorities, not putting voters first. An issue on both sides of the isle. It is what motivates “the Good, the Bad and the Ugly” my effort to keep the conversation open and more transparent.
