Perspective: Markets adjusting to stated norms:

The market continues to ‘hope’ for better news from the Federal Reserve Board. After years of cheap money, the desire to return to those heydays continues. I am thrilled with the conversations with many people who are looking beyond this to accept where we are.

Often times, when we see a change in real estate, it is good to wait 90 days, before over reacting. Consider the rise in mortgage rates and the fears that followed. Over the last 90 days, nationwide data for home sales I reviewed, indicate an average of 3.7 offers for every property. Despite high mortgage rates, homes win.

How about coastal communities – like our Bay Area. It is in short supply, but long on demand. As a result, many have moved to other communities throughout the State and other states. Thus the appreciation engine is no longer just coastal. Consider St. Louis. Doing a bit of research on the St. Louis community, I noted the 60 year average appreciation was 3 % (SF Bay Area 6.5 %). The last 10 years and 5 years were both tracking over 6 %. Ten years – this is not an aberration, but reflective of a new normal.

Investing and wealth building thru appreciation is now a nationwide norm.

Interest Rates: Tracking the high points encountered the past year or so. The Federal Reserve: They will hold rates and expect these higher rates for a while.

Shift in Economic Strength? Next 90 – 120 days should be indicative of the market direction and overall economy. Student loan repayment begins. Tough one: Over the year, credit card interest rose from 14 % to 25 %. Lifestyles will be shifting. How soft or hard is the unknown. Good news: Savings are returning to normal.

The Good, the Bad, And the Ugly

The Good – Seeking alternative sources of future energy

As well, electric scooters are already displacing four times as much oil as all the electric cars. The future is underway.

In Europe, we see a growing awakening to the hydrogen daydreams. In the United States, geologists just found what could be the world’s biggest lithium deposit – in a volcano. Add to this, a new transmission project bigger than the Hoover Dam. It just broke ground in New Mexico. As for a look for the EV future, California maybe the best example of what it will look like. And don’t write off the European legacy automakers. Check out Mercedes and BMW. The innovative and creative mind never ceases to imagine.

The Bad – The shifting and redefining of terminology – often unspoken changes. CoVid ‘vaccine’ is now a CoVid ‘shot’ or ‘jab’. Another is global warming, now being called climate change – warmer or colder. Even the definition of recession. Definitions do matter and keeps people informed. We need to trust them. Though these may not be overly critical, it is curious the need for redefining terms. Quite interesting.

The Ugly – Another small piece of personal perspective. Being adjacent to Santa Clara, and having attended more than a few events, I often read vitriol comments regards leadership of the stadium. I attended a concert a few weeks ago, and parked at the convention center – $ 60. Doing quick math, I would say the City picks up about $200 K from each event. Question: How much is that for a year’s worth of events ? Pretty nice, but the comments from so many, continue to be so negative. For shame.

Bottom line: We strive to help maintain a sense of balance and encourage others to do the same. For certain, each of us have challenges in our lives, yet our desire to improve and do better is steadfast. It is our common driving force. Yes, higher taxes, higher interest rates, and higher inflation are real challenges to family finances. Yet, the good news: History shows this too will pass. Stay active and motivated.
